Studio lights don't come cheap. Kino Flo LED lights in particular come in at some very high prices that are sure to scare away most portrait photographers. But what if you could create your own set of LED lights, perfect for headshots and portraits for under $300?

Photographer Joe Edelman has done just that and created a video tutorial to help enterprising photographers do the same thing. Three years ago, Edelman put together a tutorial for creating a fluorescent DIY lighting setup, but LEDs have numerous advantages over fluorescent lights. They weigh and cost less (to buy and use), are easier to build, last longer, don't flicker and don't produce much heat.

Watch the video below to see all of the materials that you will need for this project. His total costs came to $246 and about an hour of manual labor. You will need a few tools though and a drill will be mighty helpful.

Edelman has produced many great tutorials, so be sure to check out his YouTube channel for more. Visit his website and follow him on Instagram to see more of his work.
