Canon 1DX II Field Test Part II: The flagship sports shooter taken out of its element in beautiful Newport

I've had some cool shooting opportunities over the years, but for our second Field Test of Canon's flagship sports shooter -- the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II -- I had one of the coolest yet. Canon recently invited members of the press to shoot with the EOS-1D X II and a generous selection of high-end lenses and accessories in the incredibly picturesque seaside town of Newport, Rhode Island.
And not only did we have a spectacular selection of gear on hand -- we also had access to Onne van der Wal, an accomplished round-the-world sailor, pro photographer and a member of Canon's inspirational Explorers of Light program. Onne had some great shoots prepared for us, from capturing high-speed runs with a friend's powerboat to shooting a hard-fought yacht race, and plenty else besides. And as well as all of the aquatic action, there was plenty of land-based shooting around the streets and docks of beautiful Newport, too.
I have to say that the Canon 1DX II acquitted itself extremely well through all of this, not that I'd expect any less from a pro-grade photographic tool like this. I came home with a great many shots I'm really happy with, not to mention some excellent prints made on one of Canon's imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printers.
To see my shots from Newport -- and to get my thoughts on the Canon 1DX II -- you'll want to read my just-published Canon 1DX II Field Test Part II! And if you've not already done so, you'll also want to take a close look over my colleague William Brawley's first Field Test for the 1DX II, in which he gave Canon's pro flagship a test with something a little more in its element, shooting from the sidelines at rugby and soccer matches.
