Photographer Daniel Norton is a regular on Adorama's YouTube channel and recently created a behind the scenes video about creating unique beauty images as part of his "OnSet" video series.

We share many videos on our site about using speedlights, strobes and other typical light sources for photography, but in the video below, Norton busts out a spotlight to create a distinct image. Norton modified the light to create a narrower beam of light and illuminate just a single eye on his model. For a rim light, Norton uses a more conventinal Profoto D2. With his model dressed in black and using a black background, the plan was to create an extreme contrast.

With such a narrow beam of light and a homemade modifier on it, the image took some trial and error. Daniel shot tethered to Capture One Pro and used a Nikon D5 with Nikon's latest 105mm f/1.4E prime lens.

When trying to create distinct images, don't be afraid to try unusual light sources. With a bit of patience and creativity, there are infinite possibilities for making great photos.
