ON1 has announced a major update to ON1 Photo RAW in the form of ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5. The update to the all-in-one photo organizer, editor and RAW processor for macOS and Windows brings numerous new features to the application plus optimization to performance and the overall user experience. The major updates to ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 include the following:
- Lens Correction: A new Lens Correction pane has been added to ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 and it will automatically detect lenses and apply corrections, including distortion, chromatic aberration and peripheral fall-off corrections.
- Compare mode: The new compare mode allows you to select up to 15 photos and zoom and pan into each of them simultaneously.
- Details Pane: A new Details Pane includes improved sharpening and noise reduction functions.
- Improved search: The search function has been improved with new metadata fields and user control over whether the search will require results to cater to any or all selected search parameters.
- Clone stamp: The clone stamp retouching tool is now inside the Develop and Effects pane as part of a non-destructive workflow.
- Stacking presets: You can now stack presets in Effects when using the Insert Preset command.
- Improved preset management: In addition to the previous improvement, you can now delete and rename preset categories as well as export categories for backing-up or sharing.
- Lightroom Migration Assistant: In ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5, you can migrate photos, their metadata and collections from Adobe Lightroom to ON1 Photo RAW.
- New camera support: In ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5, the following cameras are now supported: Apple iPad Pro 9.7, Canon EOS T7i (800D/Kiss X9i), Canon EOS M6, Canon EOS 77D (9000D), Fuji X100F (compressed), Huawei Mate 9, Panasonic LX10, Olympus Pen F, Panasonic ZS70 (TZ90), Pentax KP, Olympus E-PL3, Sony NEX5n and Sony A9.
- Performance improvements and bug fixes: Other performance upgrades include a reduced memory footprint and increased stability. Numerous user-reported bugs have been fixed as well.
While not specific to ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 but rather to the software overall, it is important to note that the software functions both as standalone software and as a plugin to Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. Further, the app can act as a host to other editing apps. ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 supports online storage services as well, including Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive.
While the team is pleased to introduce the new update, they emphasize that they are not done and that users should expect continued improvements to the software. More free updates are scheduled to arrive this summer and ON1 President Craig Keudell says, “We can’t be successful unless we listen to the photography community. Our main goal and something people rarely see from other companies, is the transparency with the way we develop our products. Several features and improvements in this release are the result of feedback from the ON1 community.” Users with ideas should head to the ON1 Photo RAW Project page to submit their own ideas for improvements to the software. The more votes an idea gets, the more likely it is to be included in future development cycles. You can shape the future of ON1 Photo RAW, but only if you contribute ideas and votes.
ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 is available now with an introductory price of just under $100, a $20 savings over its regular price. Previous owners of ON1 Photo or Perfect Photo Suite can upgrade for $80 (regularly $100). For a limited time, ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 comes with training materials including four ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 Master Courses created by professional photographer Matt Kloskowski and ON1 Director of Product Dan Harlacher. Further, ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 comes with activation for up to five computers. You can download a 30-day free trial of the software here.
