Capture better natural light portraits by harnessing the power of the sun during the “golden hour”

Portrait photographer Manny Ortiz regularly publishes excellent video tutorials on his YouTube channel, some of which we have shared in the past. His latest video tutorial is all about golden hour portraits.
Some photographers don’t have access to artificial lighting or just love using natural light for portraits, and the first and last light of the day can offer beautiful, rich natural light. It’s not always easy to harness the power of natural light, however, and that’s where Ortiz comes in. In the video tutorial below, Ortiz covers how to use the sun as a main light and how to use it as a backlight.
When the sun is your main light, it can be so bright that your model squints and it can create harsh shadows. Ortiz has his model to look down to help prevent squinting. Having your model wear sunglasses can work too. For the rest of the tips, watch the video.
