Wildlife photography tips: How to photograph birds in flight

 

 

Wildlife photographer Sam Rowley has teamed up with NatureTTL for a new video tutorial about photographing birds in flight. It's one of the most challenging types of wildlife photography, but it's also one of the most rewarding.

First things first, you will want a sturdy tripod and if possible, a gimbal head, as it will allow you to quickly and smoothly pan and move your camera around in all sorts of different angles. You'll often be shooting up above you, which can be tricky with normal tripod setups. A long lens is a must for nearly any type of wildlife photography, especially bird photography. You will want a camera and lens combination that offers fast, reliable autofocus performance.

It's not all about gear, of course. Practice is key and your camera settings are critical. Shutter speed is unsurprisingly the most important camera setting. You may have to increase your ISO quite a bit to be able to get a good exposure with a fast enough shutter speed. You can also try panning if you'd like to embrace a slow shutter speed. Panning is tricky, so don't be discouraged if it is too difficult at first.
