The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is the latest in a long line of premium smartphones from the giant Korean manufacturer. It has a similar dual-camera setup as is found in the Galaxy Note 8, but it has a very big new trick up its sleeve, a variable-aperture lens on the main camera. When light is low, the lens opens up to f/1.5. When the available light is sufficient, the lens stops down to f/2.4, increasing sharpness and detail rendition. With the second camera, there's a 2x optical zoom. Further, there's also a new super-slow-motion video mode.

Both the S9's cameras are 12 megapixels, although the main camera has a 1/2.55-inch sensor with its variable aperture lens whereas the secondary camera has a 1/3.6-inch sensor. Both lenses have optical image stabilization and the main sensor has dual-pixel phase-detect autofocus. The S9+ can record 4K video at up to 60 frames per second and can record 720p video at up to 960 frames per second.

The Google Pixel 2 and Apple iPhone X didn't occupy the top two spots on DxOMark's Mobile camera rankings for very long. Samsung's new Galaxy S9 Plus has taken the top spot and posted the highest overall score yet, 99.
