Large-format film photographer captures a beautiful and challenging Death Valley sunrise

We join Ben Horne on his fourth day in Death Valley. On this recent trip, Horne captured stunning images of an inversion and other excellent shots, but as a large-format film photographer, he was unsure how the photos would turn out while he was still there. He was filled with doubt, which he turned into determination. He wanted to capture a great sunrise shot, so he headed out very early in the morning on a moonless night.
If you've ever tried to scout locations in the dark, you know how tricky it is. Horne persisted and headed to a location he'd been to before. He spent about an hour looking around the area for the right shot and then set up his 8 x 10 view camera, another difficult task to perform in the dark. When he got set up, Horne then had to use his headlamp to help dial in the focus before the impending sunrise delivered light and color to the scene.
