Check out our DEEP-dive walkthrough of the Canon EOS R
posted Monday, September 10, 2018 at 5:39 PM EST
The last few days have been a blur of activity as we've done our best to capture as much as we can about the new Canon EOS R to share with all of you. We still have a lot more testing to do, but we wanted to give you our first take, for a detailed walkthrough of the camera, its lenses and its capabilities.
It's a deep-dive video that covers a lot of ground, and it's very detaied. (~40 minutes worth of detail :-0) Below is an index of all of the subjects we discuss regarding the EOS R, each of them timestamped to their respective point in the YouTube video, so you can click into any section you like and jump around at will!
- Tilt-swivel screen and touch UI
- Shutter covers the sensor!
- Autofocus - 5,655 points, touch & drag
- Line-type AF only
- Phase-detect, not hybrid AF(!)
- -6 EV AF limit(!)
- How fast is the AF? - Not 5DIV/1DXII replacement
- New mount: why 20mm flange depth?
- EF compatibility and adapters
- Why the extra contacts?
- R-series lens quality and focusing
- User interface
- Fv - flexible priority AE
- "Manual function bar (??)"
- AF modes
- Touch/drag AF
- Mfn button & options
- Top panel display - nice...
- Great viewfinder
- THE card slot
- Video! (Kinda like the 5DIV)
- Ugh, 4K crop factor... (1.7x)
- Nice: MP4 at 480 Mbps and internal log!
- Weird: C-log is half size of standard vid?
- Focus peaking! (but...?)
- Focus guide: Nice feature from Cinema EOS
- Weird but true: Video-only intervalometer?
- Only FF mirrorless with no IBIS
- Control ring UI
- Adapter with drop-in ND filter
- Kinda like the 5DIV
- Video matches 1DXII *really* well
- Summary/Outro
This is a loooong video, even by our standards, so we'd like to know what you think of it. There was a lot to talk about that we wanted to share, but we'd like to hear your feedback. What do you think? Too much, about right, not enough? Please let us know in the comments below, and also feel free to ask any questions you might have about the EOS-R. We'll answer to the best of our knowledge, and if we don't know, we'll ask Canon to find out. Thanks as always for your support!
For more on what you can expect from the Canon EOS R, make sure to check back with us throughout the coming weeks as we continue to test it and publish our results.
