There’s nothing like taking to the skies for a fresh new perspective in your photography. With the advent of affordable, capable drones, nearly anyone can try their hand at aerial photography. In the newest video at NatureTTL, photographer Olly Jelley shares tips and tricks to help you take better drone photos.

On the one hand, drones allow you a different kind of creative freedom. On the other hand, with the ability to capture shots at nearly any angle, there are complications. The first step to drone photography is having a drone. There are many great options out there today. Jelley, a working pro, opted for a DJI Mavic Pro. DJI recently released the latest version with the Mavic Pro 2, which you can order here. No matter which drone you choose or already have, you can immediately start flying high and capturing gorgeous top-down shots. When you are doing this, you should be careful not to over rotate your gimbal and create a sense of tipping over in your shots. You can try to find something relatively straight in your frame to help you keep everything lined up and ensure you haven’t rotated your gimbal too far.

As cool as top-down shots are, after shooting one, give a different angle a try. Start bringing your camera back up and see if there isn’t another neat perspective of the same scene. By using a shallower angle, you can see very far in a landscape and if the light is right, you can capture shots with incredible depth.
