Once you have a camera and lens you like, one of the best things you can do to improve your photography is ensure your gear is mounted on a stable and sturdy tripod and head combination. There are a lot of different types of tripods and even more variety when looking at tripod heads, so how do you choose the right one? For wildlife photographers, Morten Hilmer’s newest video will be of particular interest.
In the video below, Hilmer discusses the pros and cons of numerous tripod heads, including a gimbal style head, a ballhead and even a video head. For Hilmer, who not only does wildlife photography, but also a lot of nature and landscape photography with shorter lenses, he’s long been searching for the perfect tripod head which can do it all, working well with wide-angle lens all the way to something like a 600mm f/4 super telephoto prime. Unfortunately, the perfect tripod head probably doesn’t exist, although a heavy-duty ballhead can come close. To see a full breakdown of ballhead versus gimbal versus video heads for wildlife photography, watch Hilmer’s video below. You can see more videos from Hilmer by clicking here.
