In an ideal world, when you wanted sun rays in a landscape image, nature would provide the perfect conditions. However, it rarely works out that way out in the field. Fortunately, with photo editing software, it is possible to accentuate natural sun rays or even add natural-looking rays during your post-processing workflow.

In the video below, photographers Mads Peter Iversen shows us how to add sun rays using Skylum’s Luminar photo editing software, which you can learn more about by clicking here. The versatile software, which can be used an extension to Adobe software or on its own, has a very powerful sun ray filter feature built in. The software uses artificial intelligence to evaluate the image and create realistic sun rays, which you can then customize to your liking, in a matter of seconds. The trick is to create a final image which appears realistic and that the sun ray seems like something which could have happened in real life. It is all too easy to go over the top with the effect, so a subtle touch is often the best approach.
