First revealed at Photokina, Sigma has announced that their new 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens will be hitting store shelves later this month. The new flagship large-aperture telephoto zoom will join two other f/2.8 zoom lenses, the 14-24mm and 24-70mm Art lenses, to complete the standard pro-zoom trio.

While a “Sports” lens, the new 70-200mm f/2.8 lens delivers the optical formula found in Sigma’s “Art” lenses, while including the rugged and weatherproof build quality of the company's "Sports" lenses. The lens is built with a dust- and splash-proof structure and utilizes magnesium alloy components. In fact, the magnesium alloy for this lens has been crafted in Sigma’s new Sigma Aizu factory in Fukushima, Japan, which is now fully operational.

Regarding the optical construction, the zoom lens has 9 “F” Low Dispersion elements 1 Special Low Dispersion element. The lens has an 11-blade aperture diaphragm to help create smooth bokeh and an image stabilization system to keep your shots sharp, even at low shutter speeds. Of the new Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens, aviation photographer and Sigma Pro Jim Koepnick says, “There are three lenses a working professional photographer always wants in his or her camera bag – a wide zoom, a medium zoom and a telephoto zoom. All of professional quality and F2.8 brightness. We call it the must-have trio. With those three lenses you can handle just about any job a client throws at you. The trio in my camera bag has just been updated in a most professional way. I’ve just added the new Sigma 70-200 F2.8 Sport lens. For my type of photography, which includes action, commercial and photojournalism, this lens will get the majority of my use. Putting it to work the last few days, the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 Sport lens delivered in every case with professional caliber results.”

As has been the case with many Sigma lenses, the new 70-200mm f/2.8 costs less than the Canon and Nikon versions, retailing for $1,499 USD. This is $300 ($600 when a current promotion ends) less than Canon’s 70-200mm f/2.8 and a full $1,000 less than Nikon’s newest FL 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.
