Creating a festive composite portrait from start to finish with photographer Gavin Hoey

In the newest episode of Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey, Gavin shows us how to capture a festive portrait for this holiday season. For this holiday portrait, Gavin shot the background separately from his model, which introduces not only a bit of complexity, but also some flexibility in how you approach the photo.
In this case, the compositing was born of necessity because Gavin wanted to capture a portrait with a bunch of winter-themed stars in the frame. Unfortunately, he only had one star. To make it easier to post-process later, Gavin photographed his single star against a black background. It's also important to think ahead, because you don't want any parts of your eventual composite to have vastly different lighting than the subject.
