Nikon has, for many years, lightly danced around the idea that their cameras could, or should, be used to create high-end video. Though there was no reason they could not have been used for it, the cameras up until the release of the Nikon Z6 simply lacked the power or the features to really be a great video camera. They could work in a pinch, but they were rarely a professional's go-to. Nikon looks like they want that attitude to change, first by giving the Z6 some serious video chops (and the quality of the footage looks stellar) and second by packaging it in a new cinematography kit. The new Nikon Z6 Filmmaker's Kit packs in most of what you need to get up and running to shoot high-quality video right out of the box...

The kit includes:

  • Nikon Z6 camera body
  • NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens
  • FTZ Mount Adapter
  • Atomos Ninja V 4K HDR 5-inch Monitor Recorder
  • Rode VideoMic Pro+
  • MOZA Air 2 3-Axis Hand-Held Gimbal Stabilizer
  • An additional EN-EL15b battery
  • A coiled HDMI cable
  • 12-month Vimeo Pro membership
  • The Art of Making Music Videos Nikon School online course featuring Nikon Ambassador Chris Hershman

It should be noted that while the kit does include the excellent Ninja V recorder, the batteries for it as well as the miniSSD required for recording are not included in this kit. They will have to be purchased separately.

That said, the Nikon Z6 Filmmaker’s Kit will available in late January for a suggested retail price of $3,999.95, which is a considerable discount off the MSRP of each product if they were to be bought individually. A quick search of each of these products puts this bundle almost $1000 cheaper than trying to buy each piece of the kit on its own.
