How to create beautiful black and white photographs using Adobe Photoshop

Aaron Nace of Phlearn is back with yet another great Photoshop tutorial. This time, the focus is on black and white photography. We aren't interested in a simple black and white conversion, but rather, the ways in which you can use the tools in Photoshop to quickly and easily control different tonal values within your image to create a personalized and impactful black and white photo.
Before we get started with the technique, if you'd like to follow along with the same image Aaron uses in the video below, click here. Now that we have an image open in Photoshop, the first step is to convert our image by going to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Black & White. This adjustment layer will allow you to choose the lightness values of red, yellow, green, cyan, blue and magenta color channels, which offers a lot of flexibility. Next, we want to choose the light and dark levels of our image. To do this, we go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels. With a levels adjustment layer, we can adjust input and output levels. To see how to use this adjustment and to learn about the rest of this black and white conversion technique, watch the video below.
