For photographers interested in long exposure photography, neutral density filters are a very useful accessory. However, as photographer Attilio Ruffo shows in his latest video, they are not always necessary. Photography is an expensive hobby as it is, so it makes sense to not buy new accessories and equipment unless you are sure they'll benefit your photography. You can try your hand at long exposure photography without buying a bunch of new gear.

By taking control of the ISO and aperture settings of your camera and lens, you can capture long exposure images without the use of filters. This doesn't mean a filter isn't necessary in certain situations, such as in the middle of the day when ambient light is very bright, but it does mean that in lower light scenarios, it is still possible to take beautiful long exposure images without a filter.
