Leica Q3 43 Rumors: Is a New Premium Compact on the Way?

Leica is the closest thing the camera market has to a celebrity brand. Thanks to their premium spot on the market and excellent blend of minimal design and maximum quality, they are the go-to brand for many of the world’s top photographers - as such, rumors of a new Leica Q3 variant have certainly drawn our attention. Though as yet unconfirmed by Leica themselves, this compact digital camera would sit in an interesting spot in the market should it exist.

Recent leaks via Leica Rumors hint at a new iteration of the Leica Q3 with a fixed lens. Details are scarce, but the existence of this camera is good news for Leica fans - but potentially bad news for another camera in the company’s roster…

Leica Q3 43 Release Date

Alongside its existence, the leak highlights that the camera is set to be announced before the end of 2024 - but when? Leica are very good at keeping their products under wraps until the last possible moment. Often the first official word on a Leica camera is when it is released: adding to its premium appeal. As such, when rumors suggest a camera is to be announced before the end of the year, you can rest assured that it will arrive soon after.

The recent leaks have shed light on the Q3, and all but confirmed a release on the 26th September - just a few days away. It is expected to have a price point around the $7,500 mark (£5,700 or €6,800) making it a costly camera - though not as expensive as the new M11-D.

They may want to hold off on any other Leica orders, however, as the rumor comes with some cryptic bad news regarding another Leica product: the Leica Q3 Monochrom. Rumored for release in 2025, the leak alleges that we may not see it any time soon:

This rumor also raises the question: what about the Leica Q3 Monochrom? I received some bad news on this topic, but I still do not feel comfortable sharing it online because I am not sure how accurate is the information I received. Stay tuned for updates.

As with all leaks and rumors, don’t take them as gospel. Information is so limited on both this product and the potential cancellation of another, so we aren’t making any bets with Vegas on either…

Leica Q3 Potential Specs

The recent leak in the run-up to release is the most substantive addition to the current Q3 discourse. With Leica Rumors posting a series of marketing materials that give us a more concrete look at the specifications of the Q3:

It does seem to be effectively a reiteration of the original Q3, but paired with this new lens. Starting off, Leica continues to provide great, large sensors in their cameras. At 60MP, you have ample cropping capabilities for your shots - which also gives the attached lens far greater versatility than the fixed-length 43mm would initially suggest.

The most interesting element discussed is the fixed length lens: at the 43mm mark with an f/2 aperture, this appears to be a reasonable mix of wide-angle and portrait range for gorgeous imaging. The lens would also be Leica’s signature APO (Apochromatically Corrected) for minimized chromatic aberration and crisp images. Paired with the large sensor, this lens is able to frame-up digitally cropped images to anywhere between 43mm and 150mm - making for a versatile focal range.

The Q3 variant also has an exceptional ISO range, from ISO 50 to ISO 100,000, for great optical performance in even the darkest of conditions. Factor that in with an OLED EVF, a 15FPS electronic shutter and up to 8K video at 30FPS; and the Leica Q3 43 very quickly justifies its premium price point.

One element we’re curious about is the aforementioned “bad news” regarding a Q3 Monochrom: could there have been some miscommunication? Leica Rumors themselves doubt the validity of this bad news, so we perhaps wonder if this apparent Q3 variant could be a Monochrom edition - trading color photography for enhanced visual processing. Given the popularity of the Q2 Monochrom among Leica photographers, we doubt that the manufacturer would entirely can the camera. As we say, nothing has been confirmed, but it could be a sideways move from Leica…

Other than that, we should expect the usual hallmarks of Leica: exceptional build quality, minimalist aesthetic, and unfortunately a premium price. Though Leica’s value is always on display, we’re a few paychecks away from being able to afford this high-end compact camera.

We’ll be keeping an eye on any further developments of this potential new Q3, and will hopefully have more to share in the not-too-distant future. Leica releases are always worth getting excited about, and the prospect of a new high-end portrait compact - monochrome or not - definitely has our attention.
