Canon had a great year as the company recently released a pair of new mirrorless cameras in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The Canon EOS R1 is the brand’s newest flagship model while the EOS R5 Mark II is a refresh to its current best-selling camera.

Despite releasing two new models, Canon is rumored to add another mirrorless camera to its current lineup. According to reliable leaker Canon Rumors, the company will announce the Canon EOS R6 Mark III before the year ends. The insider teased "R6 Mark III is coming......... [CR11]."

One skeptical user responded to the rumor saying that the R6 Mark III is coming “eventually.” The insider doubled down saying that there is a hint in the original post.

This isn’t the first time that Canon Rumors mentioned the Canon EOS R6 Mark III. In July, the insider shared that it believes Canon will focus on the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II. However, the leaker revealed that "multiple sources claim that it is indeed coming this year."

The expected Canon R6 Mark III specs

The specifications for the rumored EOS R6 Mark III have been scarce despite all the noise about the model being released this year. One known fact is that the upcoming model will have a variant of the sensor found on the Canon EOS R3. The R3 is equipped with a 24MP backside illuminated sensor (BI) with highspeed readout to help reduce rolling shutter. If the information is correct, the EOS R6 Mark III will be getting the best sensor in its market segment.

The Canon EOS R6 Mark III will reportedly have an increased frame rate increase. This means that the camera will use a CFExpress Type B instead of the Dual SD Card slot found on the R6 Mark II. We expect the R6 Mark III to match the recently launched Nikon Z6 III’s CFExpress B and SD card slot combo.

We also expect the Canon EOS R6 Mark III to match the Nikon Z6 III in terms of video performance. The latter features 12-bit internal video recording, higher frame rates in 4K and 1080p, and internal RAW video capability.

Based on the Nikon Z6 III, we expect the EOS R6 Mark III to receive an upgrade to its EVF. The current R5 Mark II sports a 3.69 million dot OLED EVF while the Nikon Z6 III has a 5.7 million dot OLED EVF. It would make sense for Canon to at least match its closest rival.

Canon released the original EOS R6 in July 2020 while the R6 Mark II arrived in November 2022. The timeline aligns with the rumored November 2024 release window. However, we are not entirely certain at this point. Canon may opt to delay the release to the first quarter of 2025 at one of the big trade shows.

We will be eagerly awaiting the announcement of the Canon R6 Mark III. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait until 2025. As with most unconfirmed rumors, take this one with a pinch of salt.
