Sony is getting an exciting new lens in the Sigma 28-105 F/2.8 FE. While details about the lens have been scarce, the first images have already leaked online.

The leaked image of the Sigma 28-105 F/2.8 lens was shared by Sony Alpha Rumors on X. It shows the top view of the lens paired with the Sony A7RV full-frame camera. In the photo, the lens looks massive when mounted on the Sony A7RV.

What we know about the Sigma 28-105mm F/2.8 DG DN

The upcoming Sigma 28-105mm F/2.8 DG DN will not be exclusive to the Sony E-Mount. According to reports, the lens will also be available for the L-Mount making it accessible to Leica, Sigma, and Panasonic full-frame cameras.

While official specs will be revealed tomorrow, we gathered some information from the leaked images. The DG designation means that the lens is designed for full-frame cameras. The DN badge indicates that the lens is designed to work only with mirrorless cameras.

We also assume that the upcoming lens will be part of the Sigma Art lineup because of the “A” badge on the lens barrel. Art lenses are known for their superior optical performance, build quality and image quality. The lineup is targeted towards the professional photographer market.

Interestingly, the lens does not have the OS badge to indicate the presence of Optical Image Stabilization. This means that the lens will be relying on the IBIS (in-body image stabilization) commonly found on current-generation mirrorless cameras. The Sony A7RV shown in the leaked image features a 5-axis IBIS system allowing for up to 8-stops of compensation.

The price of the Sigma 28-105mm F/2.8 DG DN is rumored to be cheaper than Canon’s 24-105mm F/2.8 which costs $3000. We expect the lens to be priced around the $1500 to $1800 range.

The lens will have an 82mm filter thread and weighs 990g.

Is this lens for you?

The Sigma 28-105mm F/2.8 DG DN will be a great choice for photographers who are looking for one lens to cover the wide to telephoto range. It will be a great choice for a walk-around lens for travel and portraits. We feel that this lens will be great in the hands of wedding and events photographers as it combines the most frequently used focal lengths of the 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. The constant F/2.8 aperture will make the lens perfect for covering low-light situations in concerts and indoor events.

For APS-C format shooters, the lens will be more of a standard to long telephoto lens having an equivalent of 42mm to 150mm. It will be perfect for portraits and events when paired with APS-C cameras.

We will get to know more about the Sigma 28-105mm F/2.8 DG DN during the official announcement on September 5th.
