DJI is an often-overlooked brand in the world of imaging: from drones to action cameras, and even some potential mirrorless systems in the works, the company offers a huge range of products. One of their most popular, the DJI Mavic 3, has gone almost 3 years without an upgrade - which has us wondering if we could see a DJI Mavic 4 release date within the next year.

There isn’t much to go on regarding this new drone, but the hype for such a popular addition to DJI’s arsenal would be roof-raising. Here’s the current roundup of news, rumors and leaks regarding the DJI Mavic 4.

Though it has been 3 years since a mainline entry in the Mavic range of drones, we did see the DJI Mavic 3 Pro last year - which boasted a suite of improvements across the board. This can either be viewed as a positive or a negative mark against a DJI Mavic 4 release date this year: on the one hand, it shows that development of Mavic models is ongoing; on the other, it could suggest that we won’t see the drone for another few years.

Some news appeared in the form of a leak by prominent scooper @Quadro_News, who posted what appears to be the first look at the Mavic 4 in July - with a major caveat. As you’ll see below, the Mavic 4 was shown off in a broken state:

Bogdanov didn’t go into detail as to whether this was a work-in-progress model, or a simple look-in at the production line of an imminent new release. It could show that the product exists, in some form or another. So what does that mean in regards to release?

We predict that we’ll get our first (intact) view of the DJI Mavic 4 in early 2025, with a release date between January and February. DJI has a stack of drones, action cameras and other releases between then and now - after a relatively quiet first half to the year - so we doubt they will want to stack shelves with too many similar products.

DJI Mavic 4 Specs Predictions

Details and few and far between on what we can expect from the Mavic 4 specs. The leaked image highlights a similar quadcopter design to what we’re used to, with what could be a larger sensor in the camera. The Mavic 3 employs a Micro 4/3 sensor, so whilst DJI fans have been crying out for a drone with a 1” CMOS of some description, this would technically be a downgrade in terms of actual sensor size.

Like with the recently announced DJI Air 3S, we think that the more likely improvements will be to internal capabilities such as tracking software and control, with some overall enhancements to speed and range to complement them. The DJI Mavic 3 Pro has some impressive speeds and features, with a horizontal speed of 21m/s and an upward acceleration of 8m/s in good weather. It can also fly for up to 46 minutes continuously, with a range of 28km. As a baseline, expect improvements to those statistics - if only marginal.

Finally, the question remains as to what sort of video quality we can expect from the Mavic 4. Given that the Mavic 3 Pro can record 4K 120FPS, with an array of cinematic presets and D-Log capture settings, it’s a tough act to follow for the Mavic 4. Given that the Mavic 3 range is still very popular with enthusiasts and professionals alike, we doubt that the Mavic 4 will seek to totally replace its predecessors. So perhaps video quality will simply be matched, rather than overtaken? Similarly, we doubt that the array of lenses - which employ premium Hasselblad glass - will change all that much.
