We recently reported on the promise of a Fujifilm X-M 5 that we could see before the end of 2024, and it may not be the only Fuji release in the near future. Though we don’t have any official word on a Fujifilm X-Pro 4 release date, or concrete specs, there’s information circulating about this new viewfinder-only camera. The X-Pro series is among Fujifilm’s most premium lineup of products, and it’s been 5 years since an entry in the range: are we due an upgrade?

This comes to us via Fuji Rumors, who reported previously on the rumors regarding a new X-Pro model. They have warned in the past that the camera likely wouldn’t arrive in 2024, and we’re inclined to agree. This report from a trusted source, alongside confirming the camera’s continued production, highlights that the X-Pro 4 would have a far superior electronic viewfinder. Whether this refers to a physically larger or higher-resolution unit is unclear, but it would indicate that the sole means of shooting with the X-Pro range is due to improve. There’s no word on any other formal specs, nor a release date, however.

But given the latest report highlights specific technical details, is there the potential for a release date in early 2025? Given the success of the X100VI this year, Fujifilm will be looking to capitalize on its SLR-like digital cameras, and an X-Pro entrant is a strong premium pairing. Given the aforementioned gulf between releases, paired with this recent lightning-bolt success, the stage is set for the X-Pro range’s return.

But why would people want to pick up a Fuji camera that doesn’t even have a screen to view your pictures on? Fujifilm’s X-Pro 3 having only EVF-based shooting is a feature, rather than a flaw, with it encouraging photographers to focus on their image and capture it. Hearkening back to the SLR days - as many other Fujifilm cameras do - with a more classic-camera feel, the X-Pro 3 had a 26MP APS-C sensor and Fuji’s now infamous film simulations. So going forward, an X-Pro 4 has both the foundations for a successful product and half a decade’s worth of potential to improve upon.

Given advancements in sensor technology, we think a baseline improvement to the X-Pro sensor would be a welcome start. Given that rival Sony has managed to condense a full-frame sensor into a compact body with the A7C - and even has room left over for a tiltable screen - could we see the X-Pro 4 with something similar? Paired with Fuji’s range of X-Mount lenses, this could make for a winning combination among Fuji fans.

Either way, we think Fujifilm could make their success last with another strong film-like camera, and will be keeping an eye out for the X-Pro 4 release date leaks or any rumors regarding what goes into this new camera. Even if Fuji Rumors’ predictions are correct and the camera isn’t due before the end of the year, a 2025 release date isn’t that long of a wait…
