It’s only been a few days since the first images of the Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8 leaked online, in a product launch that has proven to have more leaks than a bathroom on the Titanic. The new Sigma lens was set to be announced today, but it is the company itself who stole the thunder on this occasion when it inadvertently sent out its announcement email ahead of time in the UK. As such, we have a full suite of features and information regarding this new constant f/2.8 lens for Sony E-Mount and the L-Mount Alliance.
Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8 Release Date

With the lens now announced, we have a full breakdown of the new zoom lens’ specifications:
With a focal length of 28mm through to 150mm, this lens covers a great range of wide-angle, portrait and telephoto properties. Coupled with a constant f/2.8 aperture, you can get soft focus and bokeh across that entire suite. Regarding the quality of the optics, the pre-release press release had this to say:
“The extremely advanced optical design, which includes FLD (with characteristics similar to fluorite), SLD (with ultra-low dispersion) and aspherical lenses, has resulted in the lens generating extremely high image quality in the center and on its edge, not only throughout its universal focal range, but also throughout the entire focusing distance range (for macro style shots and near-infinity focusing).”

Designed with fast autofocus systems in mind, Sigma has future-proofed this lens for future camera systems from both Sony and L-Mount brands like Panasonic and Leica. Like all the best lenses, it’s weather-sealed for environmental protection. There are also three dials, where most lenses opt for two. The option to adjust the aperture on the lens rather than in camera settings isn’t the general preference, but this lens certainly isn’t lacking for space.
Sporting Sony’s E-Mount or Leica’s L-Mount - used by a range of camera manufacturers such as Panasonic and possibly DJI in the near future - multiple camera brand loyalists will have the chance to pick up this new wide-aperture zoom lens.
All-in-all, Sigma’s new entrant in the lens market isn’t anything we haven’t seen before, but it is something worth investing in for a versatile zoom option. If you need an all-rounder lens at a constantly wide aperture, you could certainly do worse.
