Canon has had a great run thus far in 2024: announcing two new highly lucrative mirrorless cameras alongside a range of lenses and other products. But with the reports of an unknown Canon camera, that is set to appear in just over a week at the International Broadcast Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, Canon shows no signs of slowing down. Details are few and far between, but the prospect of a new addition to Canon’s repertoire is never a bad thing.

The report comes to us via Canon Rumors, which reported on the potential of a new cinema camera debuting at IBC 2024. Canon has a stall at the convention from the 13th of September to the 16th, meaning that prospective videographers have multiple days to get a look-in on this new camera. With the Canon R1 launching in November and the R5 II before that, the final months of 2024 are looking quite stacked. Our predictions would settle on an early 2025 release date, depending on both supply and demand.

So what can we expect from this cinema camera when it does arrive? Canon Rumors states that it is explicitly a lower-end cinema camera, but one sporting the same sensor as the Canon C400 - one of the company’s flagship cinema cameras. This sensor is capable of 6K 60FPS footage in RAW, or 4K 120FPS standard video. With highly capable autofocus and a suite of lenses available for RF mounting, the C400 is a great cinema camera - at least, on paper. The C400 is yet to be released, so this new cinema model would be more of a parallel pairing than a standard sequel.

This goes in tandem with the claim that the new model will be a smaller form-factor unit, perhaps using a mirrorless body like Canon’s R5C? This would limit the functionality compared to a C400, but allow for more run-and-gun styles of shooting for content creators. Given that Sony has compact cinema models like the FX30, and Nikon’s acquisition of RED is sure to spawn some more cinema-focused models from them, this is a sensibly competitive product for Canon to launch.

Though details are limited on this new Canon camera, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the news that comes out of Amsterdam’s IBC in the coming days, to see what exactly Canon has in store for us. The camera market in general is swinging towards lighter and more creator-friendly cameras, and Canon seems to be investing in that sentiment - as highlighted by a recent patent application. We’re curious to see whether this new compact cinema camera can make a name for itself among Canon’s current repertoire - and the larger videography market…
