Canon PowerShot ELPH 130 IS Preview

Looking for a new fixed-lens compact, but prefer the conventional to the controversial? (Let's face it -- unusual cameras like the PowerShot N aren't for everybody!) Well, fear not: Canon simultaneously unveiled another option that's both traditional and stylish at once.

The Canon PowerShot ELPH 130 IS, like the PowerShot N, has an 8x optical zoom lens with a 28mm wide angle, although with a maximum aperture varying from f/3.2 to f/6.9, it's not quite as bright at either end of the zoom range. It does share Canon's Intelligent IS image stabilization system, though, and it has a higher-resolution 16 megapixel image sensor paired with a DIGIC 4 image processor. There's also a three-inch LCD screen.

The Canon 130 IS includes built-in Wi-Fi wireless networking connectivity, helping you get your images off the camera and onto other devices or social networks. Once paired with your Android or iOS smartphone / tablet, and the connection can be recreated with a simple two-step process. Images can be uploaded through the device's internet connection to Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube, or sent via email, and instead of a generic message accompanying the images, you can add your own brief notes. You can also transfer images to your desktop or notebook computer through your mobile device without any fuss. Each image is temporarily uploaded to the Canon Image Gateway service, where it can reside for up to ten days. Simply switch your PC on in that time, let it connect, and the original images are pulled back down automatically. If you don't get online in time, the images will be deleted from Canon's server, but you'll get an email reminder after seven days to help you remember this.

As an affordable model aimed at consumers, Canon recognizes that ease of use is important, and includes a Smart Auto function that lets the PowerShot 130 IS recognize the scene type, then configure itself appropriately. And as well as stills, you can also shoot 720p high-def video clips. Power comes from a proprietary lithium-ion battery, and the Canon PowerShot 130 IS features an unusual Eco mode that detects when the camera is stationary and puts it in sleep mode after ten seconds.

The Canon ELPH 130 IS ships from February 2013 in three body colors: red, grey or silver. Estimated retail pricing is around US$200.
