The Nikon Coolpix S4000 is based around a 4:3 aspect ratio 1/2.3-inch CCD image sensor with an effective resolution of 12.0 megapixels, coupled with a Nikkor-branded 4x optical zoom lens. Maximum image dimensions are 4,000 x 3,000 pixels, and an alternate 16:9 aspect ratio is also available. The S4000's lens offers actual focal lengths ranging from 4.9 to 19.6mm, which equates to 27 to 108mm on a 35mm camera - a useful wide angle to a moderate telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.2 to f/5.9 across the zoom range. Ordinarily the S4000 can focus on subjects as close as 20 inches, but in macro mode this range is reduced to just 3.2 inches. The Coolpix S4000 doesn't include any form of mechanical image stabilization, opting instead solely for a software-based approach to fighting blur from camera shake. Images and movies are framed and reviewed on a 3.0-inch TFT LCD panel with anti-reflective coating and 460,000 dot resolution, which also serves as an input device courtesy of a touch-panel.
The Coolpix S4000 offers sensitivity ranging from ISO 160 to 1,600 equivalents under automatic control, and as high as ISO 3,200 controlled manually. The touch panel is used for features including a Touch Shutter function that locks focus and exposure at the chosen point and takes a picture, all with a single tap of the finger on the display. The S4000 offers 720p (1,280 x 720 pixel) movie recording. The Nikon S4000 stores images on Secure Digital cards, or in 45MB of built-in memory. Data transfer to a computer is catered for with a USB 2.0 High Speed connection. Power comes from an EN-EL10 lithium ion rechargeable battery, said to be good for 190 shots on a charge to CIPA standards.
The Nikon Coolpix S4000 ships from March 2010, priced at $200.
