Canon EOS 60D Modes and Menus
Here's a description of each of the shooting modes:
You can select between Raw, JPEG (including several image size/quality options), or Raw + Large JPEG file formats through the main menu system, where you can also enable or disable Peripheral Illumination Correction and red-eye reduction. The rest of the more complex features remain under automatic control. Autofocus mode is set to AI Focus. (AI Focus evaluates subject movement, automatically sets either one-shot AF or AI Servo AF automatically.) Drive mode choices are Single Shot, Low-Speed Continuous
Shooting, or 10-second self timer, ISO is set to Auto, and both the white balance and metering mode are set to Evaluative. The Canon 60D's rear-panel LCD display offers text help for each setting while in CA mode, for example prompting the user as to whether they want to blur the background with program shift, or make the picture brighter / darker with exposure compensation, etc.
Canon EOS 60D Menu Details

If set to Auto, movie exposure is controlled automatically. If set to Manual, shutter speed and aperture are controlled manually, and ISO sensitivity can be controlled either automatically or manually. |
|
AF mode |
- Live mode - Face Detect Live mode - Quick mode |
"Live" mode uses contrast-detect AF from image sensor data, "Face detect" mode adds face-detection, while "Quick" mode uses the dedicated phase-detect AF module. This is a duplicate of the option in Record menu 4, so if the setting is changed there, the value here will also change.

Selects the video resolution and frame rate. Available frame rates depend on Video System setting in Setup Menu screen 2. 30 frames and 60 fields per second are available only for NTSC mode, 25 frames and 50 fields per second are only for PAL mode. 24 frames per second is available for both modes. |
|
Sound Recording |
- Sound Rec.
|
- Auto - Manual - Disable |
Determines whether movies should be recorded with or without an audio track, and if set to manual, what the recording level should be fixed at. A stereo levels gauge is shown with a range from -40 dB to 0dB, and indicates when the levels on each channel have passed the recommended -12dB mark by coloring the area of the gauge beyond this point in yellow. The final square of the gauge is shown in red, and the most recent peak level is briefly indicated on the gauge after the levels have dropped back down. |
- Rec. Level |
(only available when Sound Rec. is set to Manual)
- -48 to +16 steps around default position |
||
- Wind Filter |
- Enable - Disable |
||
Silent Shooting |
- Mode 1 - Mode 2 - Disable |
Silent Mode 1 is the default, and uses an electronic shutter to initiate the exposure, and so reduces operation noise, since only the second shutter curtain must be physically operated to complete the exposure.
Silent Mode 2 does the same, but also delays reopening of the second curtain, shutter recocking, and resumption of the live view feed until the shutter button is released. This physically separates the shutter curtain operation noises, and reduces perceived noise, but prevents use of continuous shooting. Finally, the Disable mode is used for shooting with an extension tube, or for vertical shift images with a TS-E lens. Here, both physical shutter curtains are used, preventing incorrect or irregular exposures, but increasing operation noise. |
|
Metering Timer |
- 4 sec. - 16 sec. - 30 sec. - 1 min. - 10 min. - 30 min. |
Determines how long the camera's metering system should remain active without user interaction. This is a duplicate of the option in Record menu 4, so if the setting is changed there, the value here will also change. |
|
Grid display |
- Off - Grid 1 (3x3) - Grid 2 (6x4) |
Allows one of two different grids to be overlaid on the LCD before movie recording, to aid in precise alignment. (The 3x3 grid would also be useful in rule-of-thirds composition). The grids disappear as soon as movie recording starts. This is a duplicate of the option in Record menu 4, so if the setting is changed there, the value here will also change.

|
ISO Auto |
- Max.: 400 - Max.: 800 - Max.: 1600 - Max.: 3200 - Max.: 6400 |
Sets a maximum limit for the ISO Auto function. The limit only applies in Creative Zone modes. Basic Zone modes except Portrait will allow Auto ISO as high as ISO 3,200, unless flash is used, regardless of this setting. Portrait mode is fixed at ISO 100. When direct flash is used, Auto ISO is set to 400, unless this would result in overexposure, in which case Auto ISO can range as low as ISO 100. When external bounce flash is used, Auto ISO will ordinarily range as high as ISO 1,600, but will obey a lower limit from this setting. |

Allows one of two different grids to be overlaid on the LCD before movie recording, to aid in precise alignment. (The 3x3 grid would also be useful in rule-of-thirds composition). The grids disappear as soon as movie recording starts. This is a duplicate of the option in Movie menu 2, so if the setting is changed there, the value here will also change.
|
|
Aspect Ratio |
- 3:2 - 4:3 - 16:9 - 1:1 |
Adds thick blue framing guidelines to the live view display. Raw images are always saved in 3:2 aspect ratio, and can be automatically cropped when processed if the software used is compatible, whereas JPEGs are cropped in-camera. |
|
Expo. Simulation |
- Enable - Disable |
If enabled, the 60D will attempt to simulate the exposure level that would be achieved with the current settings. |
