Fujifilm FinePix Z90 Overview

The Fujifilm FinePix Z90 is based around a 14 megapixel, CCD image sensor coupled to a Fujinon-branded 5x optical zoom lens. The image sensor allows capture of not only high-resolution still images, but also of high-definition 720p video. The Z90's lens offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths ranging from a useful 28mm wide angle to a moderate 140mm telephoto. Maximum aperture information wasn't available at press time. There's no true optical viewfinder on this model, with images and movies being framed and reviewed on a 3.0-inch LCD display of unspecified resolution. The Fuji Z90's LCD also serves double-duty as an input device, thanks to a resistive touch panel overlay. It's not multi-touch capable, but it does allow for one-touch image or movie capture, and has an on-screen graphical user interface that rotates to match the camera orientation in portrait and lanscape modes. Absent from the Fuji Z90's design is any provision for mechanical image stabilization, with the Z90 instead relying solely on what Fuji terms "Digital Image Stabilization". In essence, the camera raises ISO sensitivity (and with this, both the shutter speeds and noise levels), thus attempting to freeze blur from camera shake.

The Fujifilm Z90 includes face detection capability able to locate and track up to ten faces in a scene. It also provides i-Flash intelligent flash metering, automatic upload of images and videos tagged on camera to Facebook and YouTube via the provided Windows-only MyFinePix Studio software, automatic red-eye removal, in-camera movie editing, scene recognition, and a motion panorama mode that stitches up to three separate shots into a single image. Power comes from a proprietary lithium ion battery pack, rated as good for 165 shots on a charge. Further details on this model were not available at press time.

The Fuji FinePix Z90 ships from mid-January 2011, priced at around $170. Available colors include black, red, blue, purple, and pink.
