The compact body of Pentax's Optio H90 is available in three different two-tone colors schemes - either silver and orange, silver and ceramic white, or silver and matte black. Inside, the Pentax H90 includes a twelve megapixel CCD that yields sensitivities as high as ISO 800 equivalent under automatic control, or 6,400 equivalent under manual control. The H90 places its imager behind a Pentax-branded 5x optical zoom lens with focal lengths ranging from a useful 28mm wide angle to a 140mm telephoto. On its rear panel, a 2.7-inch LCD display with 230,000 dot resolution is the sole choice on which images are framed and reviewed, with the Pentax H90 design not providing for a separate optical viewfinder.

The Optio H90 features nine-point contrast detection autofocusing, as well as a face detection function that is linked to both the camera's autofocus and autoexposure systems. The face detection function can recognize up to 32 faces in a scene, and is said to take just 0.03 seconds to operate. Pentax has included its approachable Auto Picture mode in the H90, which can automatically select between eight different common scene types - landscape, portrait, night scene, night scene portrait, standard, flower, sport or candlelight. The Pentax H90 also includes a digital panorama mode which can stitch together three images in-camera, as well as a Frame Composite function which can overlay one of ninety frames on your images in-camera. An Image Recovery function can allow the user to "undelete" images where possible.

The Pentax includes a 720p (1,280 x 720 pixel) high definition video mode with sound, with a frame rate of 30 fps. No high-definition connectivity is provided on-camera, with the Pentax H90 instead opting solely for NTSC / PAL standard-definition video output, and USB 2.0 High Speed data connectivity.

The Pentax Optio H90 includes 32.7MB of built-in memory plus SD/SDHC card storage, and is compatible with Eye-Fi cards for wireless data transfer. The H90 draws power from a proprietary D-LI88 lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack. Battery life is said to be in the region of 210 images. The Pentax H90 comes bundled with MediaImpression 2.0 for Pentax software. The camera ships from February 2010, priced at around US$180.
