Nikon Coolpix S1100pj Overview

The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is the company's second compact digital camera to feature a built-in projector, following in the footsteps of last year's S1000pj model. The projector allows users to display their still images and movies on flat surfaces such as walls and projector screens, and newly allows use as a tethered projector from an attached PC. Rather than the external stand of the S1000pj, the Nikon S1100pj now features a built-in stand that holds it steady while the projector is in use. The camera can be placed at a distance of ten inches to 7 feet from the surface on which the image is to be projected, just slightly farther than the 6.5 foot range of the S1000pj. Depending on the distance at which it is placed, the image diagonal beamed by the Coolpix S1100pj varies from five to 47 inches, again besting the 40-inch maximum of the S1000. The increased maximum throw distance and projection size come thanks to another improvement -- the Nikon S1100pj's projector now has an increased output of up to 14 lumens, using the measurement standard specified in ISO 21118, versus the 10 lumens of the previous version. Information on contrast ratio wasn't available at press time, but battery life when using the S1100pj's projector is still rated at somewhere in the region of one hour.

Beyond its standout projector feature, the Nikon S1100pj couples a slightly higher-res 14.1 effective megapixel image sensor, and couples this with a new Expeed C2 image processor, plus a Nikkor-branded 5x optical zoom lens that offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a useful 28mm wide angle to a 140mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.9 to f/5.8 across the zoom range. As well as true optical VR image stabilization, the Nikon S1100pj offers sensitivities as high as ISO 3,200 equivalent at full resolution, or ISO 6,400 at reduced resolution. Coolpix S1100pj images must be framed and reviewed on the camera's new 3.0", 460,000 dot LCD display -- an increase in both size and resolution over that from the S1000pj -- as there's no optical viewfinder on this model. The S1100pj's LCD also serves as an input device, thanks to a touch panel overlay. The Nikon S1100pj is capable of focusing as close as 1.2 inches (three centimeters) in macro mode, and includes both face detection and focus tracking capabilities.

Ease-of-use features in the S1100pj include in-camera picture editing, red-eye fix, skin softening, a blink proof mode that takes two sequential images and discards the one in which your subject blinks (if either), and a smile timer function that automatically captures an image when your subject is smiling. In addition to still images, the S1100pj can capture high definition 720p movie clips. Images and movies are stored on Secure Digital cards, including the newer SDHC and SDXC types. Power comes courtesy of a proprietary EN-EL12 Lithium Ion rechargeable battery that's rated as good for 220 shots to CIPA testing standards, which is included in the product bundle.

The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj will be offered from September 2010, with expected pricing of $350, some $80 cheaper than the previous model. Four body colors will be available -- black, violet, green, and silver.
