Fujifilm FinePix XP30 Overview

Posted: 01/05/2011

The Fujifilm FinePix XP30 digital camera features a shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof body, designed to take a licking, and keep on ticking. Able to survive a drop from 5 feet, to capture photos at up to 16.5 feet underwater, and even to be used in temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit / -10 degrees Celsius, the FinePix XP30 should be able to accompany you almost anywhere you might want to take it. On the inside of its rugged body sits a 14 megapixel CCD image sensor, which allows capture of not only high-resolution still images, but also of high-definition 720p video at 30 frames per second. The Fuji XP30 places its sensor behind a FUJINON-branded 5x optical zoom lens, with 35mm-equivalent focal lengths ranging from a useful 28mm wide angle to a moderate 140mm telephoto Maximum aperture information wasn't available at press time. Given the fair telephoto reach, mechanical image stabilization will prove useful to fight blur from camera shake, and the Fuji FinePix XP30 includes sensor shift stabilization.

The Fuji FinePix XP30 lacks any form of optical or electronic viewfinder, instead relying on a 2.7-inch LCD display. The Fujifilm XP30 includes face detection capability able to locate and track up to ten faces in a scene. It also provides automatic upload of images and videos tagged on camera to Facebook and YouTube via the provided Windows-only MyFinePix Studio software, automatic red-eye removal, in-camera movie editing, scene recognition, and a motion panorama mode that stitches up to three separate shots into a single image. Power comes from a proprietary lithium ion battery pack, rated as good for 165 shots on a charge.

One final noteworthy feature of the Fuji XP30 is its built-in GPS receiver, which can be optionally disabled to save battery life. When active, the XP30 tags the EXIF headers of images as they're shot, noting the geolocation of each image. The camera can not only indicate the locations as latitude and longitude coordinates, but also by place name. It includes a 500,000 item point-of-interest database, and can indicate the distance and direction of travel to shot locations, as well as to nearby points-of-interest. Finally, if left powered on, the XP30 can record a track log of your movements, which can then be offloaded onto a computer so that you can see your photos alongside the route taken to capture them. Further details on this model were not available at press time.

The Fuji FinePix XP30 ships in the US market from mid-February 2011, priced at around US$240. Available body color in this market include black, green, or orange.
