Fuji X-T1 IR Review -- Initial Impressions
by Gannon Burgett
Posted: 08/03/2015
Fujifilm has thrown the photography world a curveball with the announcement of an "infrared" version of its flagship X-T1 mirrorless camera, the X-T1 IR.
Similar in every other regard to its sibling, the Fujifilm X-T1 IR’s sensor captures a wider portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, including ultraviolet, infrared, and visible light. Specifically, Fujifilm states it captures between 380nm to 1,000nm, much more than the human eye (approximately 390 and 700nm) or traditional camera sensors are capable of capturing.
Infrared photography can be used in a multitude of situations, but Fujifilm specifically notes the use of the Fuji X-T1 IR for medical, scientific and forensic purposes. Of course, photographers in general will also find the unique capabilities of the X-T1 IR fun to work with, especially astrophotographers.
With the exception of the camera’s new UV/IR capture capabilities, all other major features remain essentially the same, including its 16-megapixel APS-C X-Trans II CMOS sensor, EXR Processor II, weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, 2.36-million dot OLED electronic viewfinder and 1.04-million dot 3-inch tilting LCD monitor. One difference is that ISO sensitivity expansion has been limited to 25,600 equivalent versus ISO 51,200 for its sibling, and we also suspect available film simulation and filter modes may be altered, though Fujifilm has not provided details as of this writing.
Note that this isn't the first time Fujifilm has produced an expanded spectrum version of an existing model. The Fuji S3 Pro UVIR announced back in 2006 added ultraviolet and infrared capture to the S3 Pro DSLR, and the Fuji IS-1 added infrared capture to the S9100 long-zoom camera in 2007.
The Fujifilm X-T1 IR (Infrared) is set to ship October 2015 for US$1699.95 and will be sold body-only. See our Fuji X-T1 review for an in-depth evaluation of the standard model.
