Fuji XP90 Review -- Initial Impressions
by Jeremy Gray and Zig Weidelich
Preview posted: 01/14/2016
The new Fuji XP90 is one tough cookie, waterproof up to a 50 foot depth, shockproof from 5.8 feet, freeze proof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and dustproof.
Inside this durable camera body is a 16.4-megapixel 1/2.3" CMOS sensor coupled to a 28-140mm equivalent optical zoom lens (5x optical zoom). The lens has a maximum aperture that ranges from f/3.9 at wide-angle to f/4.9 at telephoto, and can focus as close as 3.5 inches (9cm) in macro mode.
ISO sensitivity range is 100 to 3200 which can be boosted to 6400 equivalent at lower resolutions, and shutter speed range is 4 to 1/2000s. To help prevent blur from camera shake, the Fuji XP90 includes sensor-shift image stabilization.
Exposure is fully automatic but the Fuji XP90 provides +/-2 EV of exposure compensation. Capture modes include SR AUTO, Program AE, Action camera mode, Pro low-light, HDR, Natural Light with Flash, and High Speed movie. The Fuji XP90 also offers a number of scene modes including Portrait, Landscape, Sport, Night, Night (Tripod), Sunset, Snow, Beach, Under water, Under water (Macro), Party, Flower and Text.
On the back of the Fuji XP90 is a 3-inch 922k-dot LCD with an anti-reflection coating. You can use this display to watch your slow-motion videos recorded at up to 480 fps or view your images captured using either one of eleven Advanced Creative Filters or the XP90's High Dynamic Range capture mode. The Fuji XP90 can also take 360 degree Motion Panoramas and can shoot 10 full resolution images at up to 10 frames per second. The XP90 also includes built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and can record 1080/60p video.
Power is derived from a proprietary NP-45S lithium-ion battery which is charged in-camera via the USB port with an included AC adapter, and battery life is CIPA-rated at 210 shots per charge. Images and movies are stored on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards or in 96MB of built-in memory, and a Micro (Type D) HDMI port is provided to view what you've captured on your high-def TV.
The Fuji XP90 will be available in February for a suggested retail price of US$229.95 in yellow, blue, graphite with green accents, and graphite with orange accents color options.
