Nikon S7000 Review -- First Impressions
by Gannon Burgett
Posted 02/09/2015
It doesn't appear Nikon is too concerned about flooding the market with compact, long-zoom point-and-shoots. On the same night they launched the Coolpix S6900, they've also announced the Coolpix S7000. A step up from its S6900 sibling, the S7000 features a more powerful zoom and an "ultra-stylish" form factor that's sure to impress for only $50 more.
As does the S6900, the S7000 features a 16-megapixel 1/2.3" CMOS sensor, capable of firing at 9.2 frames per second with a 7 image buffer, just slightly faster than the S6900's 7 fps spec. The main differences between the two cameras is the glass that's in front of the sensor, and the display on the back of the camera.
Whereas the S6900 opts for a 25-300mm (35mm equivalent) lens, the S7000 offers a 25-500mm (35mm equivalent) NIKKOR ED 20x zoom lens with Nikon's signature "lens-shift" VR image stabilization. Additionally, Nikon's 2x "Dynamic Fine Zoom" which is an enhanced version of digital zoom is available.
And on the back, the S7000 forgoes the S6900's articulating touchscreen in favor of a fixed, 460K-dot LCD without a touch panel overlay. The S7000 also doesn't include the S6900's "kickstand" feature, nor its second shutter button on the front. Beyond that, the two cameras remain almost indistinguishable in specs, including Wi-Fi/NFC connectivity and Nikon's target-tracking, contrast-detection autofocus.
Aesthetically, the S7000 comes across as more visually appealing, with fewer buttons and a more streamlined design (thanks to its fixed LCD), despite the improved zoom range. Also affected by the design is the weight of the S7000, which comes in at 5.8oz (165g) fully loaded with the battery and SD card -- over a half-ounce lighter than the S6900.
The Nikon S7000 runs off a rechargeable lithium-ion battery rated at 180 shots and 40 minutes of video per charge. As is standard, it supports SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards.
The Coolpix S7000 will be available in March of 2015 in black for a suggested retail price of US$279.95.
