Panasonic SZ10 Review -- Hands-on Preview

by Mike Tomkins
Preview posted 01/05/2015

Want an affordable, sleek, pocket-friendly camera, but don't want to sacrifice on zoom range to get it? The Panasonic SZ10 aims to fill your needs! A followup to last year's SZ8, the SZ10 has undergone a restyling, but basic specifications are pretty similar to its predecessor.

Depending on how much of a selfie fan you are, you may want to seek out the predecessor model, however. There's a new selfie mode including beauty effects such as Soft Skin, Defocusing and Slimming, promising a whole new you for your Facebook friends -- but it comes at a price. The Panasonic SZ10's LCD monitor is actually a little smaller than that of the previous model, and yet somewhat counterintuitively, body thickness has increased just slightly.

Most specifications, though, are quite similar. At the heart of the Panasonic SZ10 is a 1/2.33"-type, 16-megapixel CCD image sensor, which sits behind a handy 24-288mm equivalent zoom lens. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.1 to f/6.3 across the zoom range, and optical image stabilization is included to help steady your shots at the telephoto end of the range or in difficult lighting conditions.

The Panasonic SZ10 is rather limited in terms of performance, likely due to the choice of a CCD image sensor. Capable of shooting at a sedate 1.4 frames per second until the card is full, the SZ10 can be coaxed to deliver 3.5 frames per second if the resolution is dropped to just three megapixels or below. ISO sensitivity ranges from 100 to 1600 equivalents, and can be expanded to ISO 6400 equivalent in High Sensitivity mode.

Images are framed on the rear-panel, tilting LCD monitor, which can be flipped upwards 180 degrees for selfie shooting. The 2.7-inch LCD panel at the heart of the monitor has a total dot count of around 460,000 dots, the same resolution as the 3.0-inch panel in the earlier camera.

Movies, too, can be captured at up to HD (1,280 x 720 pixel) resolution, with a fixed frame rate of 30 frames per second, and are stored in MotionJPEG format.

Images are stored in 80MB of built-in memory or on Secure Digital cards. Power comes from a proprietary lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack, rated as good for 200 shots on a charge. Connectivity options include a single, shared standard-def composite video outputs that also doubles as a USB data connection.

The Panasonic SZ10 will be available in early spring, listing for ~US$200.
