Panasonic TS6 Review -- First Impressions

It's been almost two years since Panasonic launched the TS5, a camera that earned a coveted Dave's Pick on our site and performed reasonably well in our 2013 Best Waterproof Camera Shootout. At long last for eager adventure photographers they've unveiled the Panasonic TS6 at this year's CES show in Las Vegas, although it looks on paper to be virtually identical to the TS5 with the exception of the external color selections.

For the first time their flagship model is now offered in a camouflage color scheme (as shown above), which is certain to appeal to adventurers or hunters looking for stealth in their wildlife shooting travels.

Otherwise, the internal workings of the TS6 are pretty much identical to the TS5, including the same 16.1-megapixel 1/2.33" high sensitivity MOS sensor, a 4.6x Leica DC Vario-Elmar zoom lens offering 28-128mm eq range across apertures from f/3.3 (wide) to f/5.9 (tele) with an anti-fog coating, a 3-inch 460k dot LCD and ISO sensitivity ranging from 100 - 3200 in standard modes, with high sensitivity extended modes available up to ISO 6400. Other shared features include a top FULL HD video resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 60p, Power O.I.S. image stabilization and Wi-Fi / NFC communications onboard.

On the tough side of the coin, the TS6 yet again sports the same specs as the TS5 in terms of general field ruggedness. These include the ability to withstand dives down to 43ft, shockproof for drops from up to 6.6ft, freezeproof to 14 degrees F and pressure resistance to 220 lbf. The onboard GPS, barometer and altimeter are also ported over from the TS5, continuing the trend for outdoor appeal on the trail. And the camera carries the same rated top burst speed of 10fps for catching action sequences, with a maximum of 7 frames captured in a given burst. Higher-speed bursts of 40fps and 60fps are also available if you're willing to lower the image resolution.

Creative modes and options abound once again, with 14 creative control modes and 16 scene modes for ease in letting the camera decide the settings for a variety of situations. The press release mentions a "new" torchlight function, although this was present on the TS5 as well. Yet again, it's pretty much the TS5 with different color options.
