In addition to the new G85, LX10 and FZ2500 cameras announced today at Photokina, Panasonic teased the next version of their esteemed photo-video flagship camera, the GH5. While only a few key details were revealed, the forthcoming GH5 promises a lot of impressive photo and video technology.

Sporting a brand new 18-megapixel Four Thirds sensor, the successor to the hugely popular GH4 will take 4K Photo up a notch -- a big notch -- not only offering 4K Photo modes at 60 frames per second, vs the 30p frame rate in current models, it will also offer 6K Photo at 30fps. The new 6K video-to-stills mode will deliver 18MP still frames gleaned from 6K/30p video clips, a sizable resolution bump compared to the 8MP JPEG images provided by current 4K Photo technology.

For hardcore videographers, the GH5 will increase internal 4K recording up to 60 frames per second. The GH4 previously capped 4K video at either 24p for Cinema 4K resolution or 30p for Ultra HD. The faster frame rate for 4K will not only expand cinematographer's options for high resolution shooting, but also add creative options such as slow motion and other high-speed filming.

Additionally, the GH5 has enough horsepower under the hood to support full 4:2:2 10-bit video recording internally, a big improvement for professional video creators who require higher quality footage for post-production. Previously, the GH4 required an external HDMI recorder in order to capture a 4:2:2 10-bit signal, while internal recording was limited to 4:2:0 8-bits.

Other specs and details on the upcoming Panasonic GH5 have not yet been announced, but Panasonic is reassuring photographers and videographer alike that the GH4 successor is most certainly in the works, coming "soon", and promising some impressive new capabilities. Stay tuned for more to come!
