Announced back at CES 2017, the second-generation version of Panasonic's versatile 24-70mm-eq. f/2.8 zoom lens is, admittedly, a minor refresh to an already-great zoom lens. Despite that, the optical quality is still fantastic, the build quality is just as rugged, and there are small improvements, such as Dual I.S. and Dual I.S. 2 compatibility and updated autofocus, that most definitely make it a better pairing with modern Lumix cameras. The 12-35mm f/2.8 II won our pick for Best Standard Zoom of 2017 in our annual lens awards, and we've now published our lab testing results for this updated zoom lens.
Panasonic's original 12-35mm f/2.8 OIS lens debuted back in 2012, ahead of the GH3, and since that time it's been one of Panasonic's most popular lenses, filling that crucial role of a constant f/2.8 zoom with a 24-70mm equivalent focal length range. Appropriate for landscapes, portraits, street photography and much more, the 12-35mm f/2.8 is an extremely versatile lens for Micro Four Thirds photographers and videographers. In our lab tests, the updated Version II of this zoom lens proved to be just as impressive: image quality was fantastic with sharp performance at f/2.8, AF speed was incredibly fast and its build quality was just as lightweight yet weather-sealed as the original.
