Canon ELPH 170 Review -- First Impressions
by William Brawley
Posted 01/05/2015
Affordability is the name of the game with the refreshed Canon PowerShot ELPH 170 IS. Featuring a slim, compact design the update to the ELPH 150 IS keeps things simple and budget-friendly by leaving out Wi-Fi connectivity and opting for a 20-megapizel CCD sensor over a faster CMOS chip.
While those features remain the same as its predecessor, the new ELPH 170 gets an updated lens. The 12x zoom lens overtakes the 10x version of the previous model to now provide a healthy 25-300mm equivalent focal length range. As the model name suggests, the camera features an optical image stabilization system to help keep things steady and blur-free, especially when zoomed all the way in to 300mm where the maximum aperture is only f/7.0, and the camera's Intelligent IS will allow the camera to automatically optimize image stabilization.
For quick and easy shooting, the Canon ELPH 170 IS features a SMART Auto mode that automatically selects the optical shooting settings for a given scene or subject. For more creative shots, the camera includes a host of special effects and filters, including Fisheye, Toy Camera and Monochrome.
Given the CCD chip, HD video recording is limited to 720p resolution and at only 25 frames per second. Videos are saved with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression in MOV file format.
The Canon ELPH 170 IS features a 2.7-inch LCD screen with a 230K-dot resolution, which is small and lower-resolution than average, but a good compromise given the price point. |
Like many other compact digital camera, the ELPH 170 IS uses SD memory cards for image storage, and like its predecessor, uses Canon's NB-11LH rechargeable lithium ion battery pack. The camera offers a special ECO mode to help you squeeze the maximum amount of juice out of the battery for extended shooting periods.
Offered in three different colors -- blue, silver or black -- the Canon PowerShot ELPH 170 IS will be available in February at a retail price of US$149.99.
