Canon SX610 Review -- First Impressions

by William Brawley
Posted 01/05/2015

For photographers who want a simple and versatile compact camera with wireless connectivity, Canon aims to please with the updated PowerShot SX610 HS. The Canon SX600 was the first in a new line of PowerShots last year, and this year, the SX610 brings a few, but notable, new features and upgrades.

The Canon SX610 maintains the same 18x optical zoom lens, providing a 25-450mm equivalent zoom range. The camera keeps the same DIGIC 4+ image processor as well, however, the new camera sports a new, higher-resolution 20.3-megapixel 1/2.3-inch type CMOS sensor -- a sizeable jump from the 16MP version in the previous model.

Like other recent Canon PowerShot models, such as the SX710 and SX530, the new SX610 also features built-in Wi-Fi with new Active Tag NFC connectivity. Like previous-generation PowerShots with NFC, the SX600 had a "passive" NFC tag. While a simple tap could establish a smart device-to-camera connection, to initiate a transfer of images from the camera, the user had to manually start this process. With the new Active Tag NFC in the SX610, by tapping an NFC-capable smart device to the camera, it will now automatically begin transferring images to the smart device.

Thanks to the new Active Tag NFC capabilities, the Canon SX610 is also compatible with the recently announced Canon Connect Station CS100 media hub device. Connected to an HDTV set as well as housing a hard drive for file storage, the Canon Connect Station CS100 allows SX610 owners to simply touch the camera to the device and start displaying, printing and even backing up their photos all automatically -- no need to dig out USB cables, memory card readers or even power-on your computer!

The Canon SX610 features a 3.0-inch fixed LCD monitor with a 922K-dot resolution, which is a noticeable upgrade over the 461K-dot screen in the previous mode.

The last big update is the addition of an "Auto Zoom" mode, which when enabled, allows the camera to automatically zoom and frame the subject for your. With this, you can have the simple, quick convenience of a truly point-and-shoot experience, but with more appropriate, more pleasing framing and composition.

The SX610 maintains the same 1080p Full HD video recording features as its predecessors. At 30fps, HD video is capture using MP4 format files.

The Canon SX610 will be offered in three color: black, red or white.

Offered in a trio of colors -- black, red or white -- the Canon PowerShot SX610 HS is set to be available for purchase in February for an estimated retail price of US$249.99.
